Book 3 in the Avoiding series

Growing up, Chyna was handed everything on a silver platter. She never wanted for anything, except love—unconditional love from her parents. Love was a foreign emotion, and watching her parents love/hate relationship was never easy.

So when it came to her personal life, she made sure she never had to relive that. With looks that could kill, it was simple for Chyna to be the love 'em and leave 'em kind of girl. And she had always been okay with it. She would rather be single the rest of her life then end up as miserable as her parents. So when a man rescued her after she was drugged in a night club, she never expected to start a relationship with him.

But one chance meeting changes it all. Chyna is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity that could sky rocket her career, and she is forced to make a decision that could ruin everything.

If you've read the first two books in the 'Avoiding' series, then you probably love Lexi's fiercely loyal best friend, Chyna, like I do. Every girl needs a Chyna in their corner. She's been there to support her best friend through thick and thin, despite Lexi's less than stellar choices.

From her first appearance in this series, I've wanted to know more about this mysterious lady. She plays the part of the spoiled, rich "princess" when it suits her, but it is clear that there is far more beneath the surface. This is Chyna's story. It was raw. It was painful at times, but it was everything that I wanted.

Chyna yearns for intimacy and connection. Mostly, she just wants to feel wanted...to be someone that somebody else cannot live without. She needs to be needed and loved. This is in stark contrast to the "tough girl" facade that she tries to project.

Like the other books in this series, 'Avoiding Intimacy' bounces back and forth between past and present, slowly revealing all pertinent details to readers little by little. While this can be a bit confusing at times, I think it works well for this series. In fact, it kind of became the signature-style of this series - a calling card of sorts.

As such, much of this story takes place during the same time period covered in earlier books in the series...just from Chyna's perspective. For much of this time, she was in Italy modeling, and away from Lexi. So, if you're expecting Lexi, and/or Jack, to be a central focus, then you will be disappointed. Lexi has a few appearances, but this book is not centered on her like the others have been.

Before reading this book I liked Chyna. After reading it, I loved her. This is one strong-willed, tough lady. Her story goes to show that money doesn't buy happiness. For a girl that seemed to have everything at the tips of her fingers, she was incredibly lonely. I gained a whole new respect for the "pretty little rich girl" after reading this book.

That being said, Chyna isn't perfect by any means. She is her own worst enemy. More often than not, she sabotages her relationships before she can get too close. As much as she craved connection, she feared it in equal measure.

As expected, Adam plays a significant role in this book. However, a new man is introduced that ends up being a major player as well. Marco is vastly different from Adam, but his relationship with Chyna proves to be equally important in Chyna's life.

One man is what she needs. The other is the embodiment of her darkest desires. Both want to claim her as their own.

Overall, I thought that this was another great addition to the 'Avoiding' series. Granted, I didn't love it as much as Lexi's story, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. I probably should have seen Lexi's books through to the end before diving into Chyna's vs. reading them in chronological order. I found myself rushing to get through this one, not because I wasn't enjoying it, but because I was dying to see what would become of the Lexi/Jack/Ramsey fiasco. I recommend reading books 1, 2, 1.5 and 3 before coming back to this one. Then, you'll know how things work out for Lexi and her guys and can savor Chyna's story.

Avoiding Intimacy edition by KA Linde Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I reviewed this book at MustReadBooksOrDie with my friend Shelley.
3.5 rounding to 4 stars

When we started this, I really found myself glad it was a Novella. I really, really like K.A. Linde's writing and style, but I had forgotten (how I still don't know) what a crazy train, circus act this particular group of people are! And you know what, I applauded Linde in the first two Avoiding books and even went with 5 stars because of the myriad of emotions that I felt while reading them. I think the bad taste in my mouth after this one was just because of Chyna.

1) Chyna. I don't really like her, and maybe this is because Lexie seems like a much more relatable character no matter how many times she falls into the black hole that is Jack. On one hand, like you said, she isn't humble, she knows what she's got and how to use it to her advantage. It works for her, and the title says it perfectly because she has always Avoided Intimacy. Everything she knows, as a product of her raising, really makes it to where she can't recognize real love of any kind until it's almost too late. The situations she finds herself in, just...wow! With Adam, John, or Marco...pick any one at random, everything gets screwed up because of her skewed view of reality. Especially John! I liked how Linde put hints in the dialogue hints that just maaayyybbbeee she was omitting a few of the details because they weren't significant to her. BUT! I felt by the end she realizes things about herself and becomes more vulnerable and was redeemed a little bit with me!

2) The guys. They are all so very different and as you said, bring out all different sides of Chyna! I wouldn't mind any one of them *ahem* well okay I would pick John, but I felt like her choices and direction of her life would definitely have had a significant impact depending on who she picked. Look at how things turned out after she left Italy. The main thing I take away from this story is how much I want a book revolving around John. I hope that is on the table someday, because she created a really compelling and promising book boyfriend in him!

3) The story. Your description of the writing was incredible (jealous over here!) and I completely agree. She always does a great job of weaving the past and present and keeping things aligned where we only get information when she's ready for us to. I can't wait to see what is to come from this author! I am pretty sure I read (my memory isn't great) on her website that she is one of those people who like raw, realistic stories for her characters modeling real life and we may not always get the happy ending we're hoping for. We don't usually get what we want without something else being taken is a way that I can describe it, and while sometimes angsty and painful I will always keep coming back for more!

Ooh, I also wanted to mention that a major selling point for this story is that it is what Chyna is doing during a large portion of Avoiding Responsibility. It really helped me enjoy it more because I knew how things turned out in the end of book two, so I was not feeling like dying during the shit hitting the fan part, as we have dubbed it, or shit/fan for short. I honestly hope that you all give or have given this series a chance, but I definitely recommend reading the first two either with a good friend (Shelley, I wish we had read THAT together!) or a large bottle of wine!
I have not liked Chyna at all, so I was less than thrilled to see that Avoiding Intimacy was focused on her. However, I went into this (long) novella with an open mind. Even if I didn't like her as a character, I figured the author would work her magic and make her story pull me in. Well, I was wrong. I definitely like Chyna less now, and I even started disliking Adam, who appeared to be quite the sweetie in the previous books. This takes place at the same time as parts of Avoiding Responsibility, but even knowing that, I wound up confused several times. The format of alternating between past and present simply didn't work, since the story only takes place over four months.

The only parts of Avoiding Intimacy I really liked was Chyna and Marco. He's this world famous fashion designer, and she's modeling for him in Milan. In fact, she's the star of the show, but that has less to do with her talent and more to do with them having kinky sex all over the place. It started to veer into BDSM territory which is ultimately what held my attention, but other than that I was just annoyed with Chyna (and Adam). The events leading up to her leaving for Milan just didn't make sense. We already knew that they broke up when Adam's brother hit on Chyna, but Adam didn't believe her. Then they get back together, and he throws a fit because she took the job in Milan. He doesn't want to do a long distance relationship, so he dumps her. Um, what? It's not like she's moving. She just took a job! She'll be back! Then of course, when she comes back home they get back together because it's no longer long distance. Whatever.
