On January 21, 1968 a B-52 Boeing Stratofortress, carrying four 1.1 megaton H-Bombs, caught fire and crashed in the Arctic Circle near Thule, Greenland. The Strategic Air Command's (SAC) Arctic Circle route was an airborne alert operation, referred to by the pilots of these large bombers as the "Chrome Dome," and was a 24-hour round-the-clock strategic undertaking. Carrying four 1.1 megaton H-Bombs, the B-52's were ready on a moment's notice to wage all-out warfare on an enemy that dare provoke an attack. The "official" response by the United States was that all four H-bombs were destroyed on impact but theorist have long maintained that one of the bombs survived the crash and lies on the seabed off Greenland near Thule airbase. 34 years later, the lost bomb that America has always denied existed, has been found - snagged by a fisherman's net - setting off alarms deep in the bowels of the most fortified structure known to mankind - the CIA. Although the United States is eager to avoid a crisis in relations with its NATO ally Denmark there is more at stake than NATO relations America is secretly mining raw plutonium in the area and conducting its most clandestine operation in the history of the United States - National Missile Defense. In a remarkable depiction of clandestine adventure, North Star Bay weaves men, submarines, individual acts of heroism, moments of tragedy and unimaginable endurance into an intricate spellbinding story.

North Star Bay (Audible Audio Edition) Richard Thompson Bill Brooks Books

Let me start by saying I loved this book. I read, on average, about five books a month in all genres. This book caught my attention because of the nuclear incident in 1968, which is the premise for the story that Thompson has created. The characters in the book are captivating and developed well. The FBI Director was so well described he literally jumped out of the book at me. My first impression of him was, "This guy is dangerous" and then he's transformed into something almost comical and finally the realization that he is a damn good Director. The CIA Director, Knox Jones, the down-home West Virginia boy with the cool head and perseverance of a bull dog is absolutely captivating. When I read a book and the characters seem so real, real enough that you can picture them in your head while reading, real enough you think, `I'd like to meet this person' then I am hooked. A few have criticized this book because of things like "the discovery of raw plutonium," which is possible by the way - Google it, you'll see. It's just a small part of the story that really does not detract but in fact adds to the suspense. The National Missile Defense (NMD) scenarios and dialogue presented are perfect, and the author's meticulous description of the underwater platform they use just blew me away. The Undersea Surveillance, the Navy, the CIA, the FBI, the President, all teaming together to try and stop the bad guys, and the surprising ending all add up to one dynamite read. I don't want to give too much more away here for those who want to get the book. Read this book; it's a real treat!

North Star Bay (Audible Audio Edition) Richard Thompson Bill Brooks Books Reviews

I have to have the feeling of authenticity and some plausibility for a thriller like this to work for me. This book provided neither to me.

There was a whole series of technical mistakes (like a nuke being able to explode in an airplane crash) that made it clear the author did not do very good research. So no authenticity.

There was also the goofy idea that Libyan intelligence could easily penetrate the blackest of US black ops with relative ease. So no plausibility.

That ruins it for me.

I got to the point where the author started talking about millions of tons of plutonium being naturally available, and that was it for me.

It had a good premise and a bunch of 4 and 5 star reviews that convinced me to acquire it when it came up for free recently, but the sheer number of technical mistakes and total lack of plausibility made it something I just did not want to pursue.
Good story taking you in political, cold war and deceptions.
There is nothing outstanding in the crisis happening but the way it is written by Mr. Thompson gives you an easy read that is very interesting.

I think this could have been a better review, but I am out of words.
I am anxious to see his next book.

Obviously based on the true incident of the B52 crash off alaska. The story is well written and quite compelling with much technical detail about defence systems, the B52 bomber and the Thule base in Alaska.
I do not recall if the Bomb was actually retrieved after the crash but it made for a good story and plot was cleverly written.
The story moved along quite well with the Goodies winning out as usual.
I found the book very entertaining and "non put down able"
I think this yarn would appeal to most readers
I enjoyed reading "North Star Bay" by Richard Thompson. It is a fast paced action adventure that kept me on my reading toes. The storyline was well developed and the characters were believable. A couple of the plot changes caught me completely off guard making the book even more fun.

I recommend this book to all who love reading high adventure spy novels.
Despite the relevant facts about Air Force weaponry which I understand to be fictitious to some degree, the tale is very fast-paced and gets the reader involved to second-guess what will happen next. Although there are some very minor grammatical errors (which some books encounter) I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I believe this novel a great read and should be very enjoyable to many readers. Thumbs up to the author!!!
